ABOUT THE 3K WALK
The 3k Walk is a major fundraiser for GRREAT and the proceeds are used to offset our continually rising costs.
GRREAT prides itself on never turning away a dog due to a medical condition. Our featured dogs this year are veteran long-term fosters, Stevie, Molly, and Polo, who are testaments to that ideal. Here are their stories.
STEVIE (08-208) came to GRREAT as a blind 8-week old puppy. After many visits to various specialists, her situation was found to be much more dire than just not being able to see. Diagnosed with Chondrodystrophic Dwarfism (blindness, kidney failure, short stature, etc.) she was not expected to live more than 6 months. GRREAT, and her foster home, were determined to make those 6 months the best they could be and she was enrolled in puppy class, taken swimming, taken to events, loved, and exposed to all that life had to offer. In conjunction with her Vet, her foster home started a special homemade diet just for her, and worked hard to find the right combination of medication and therapies to help her live life to the fullest for the short time she was expected to have left. But Stevie just didn’t believe in expiration dates! She has been a spokes-dog for GRREAT since 2008 and this month, celebrated her 12th birthday!! All due to the love, care, generosity, and support from GRREAT’s volunteers and donors.
MOLLY (14-023) was 3 years old when she came to GRREAT. Despite severe medical issues her young dog energy was extremely high. Molly was born paralyzed from the waist down and is constantly in danger of severe infections in her kidneys and bladder, and from ulcerated sores on her legs. She needs intensive therapies, medication, and support to keep her healthy. Molly sees a Chiropractor, a Physical Therapist, an Orthotic Specialist and an Internal Specialist, and she gets acupuncture, cold laser, hydro-therapy, and a rotating schedule of medicinal support. Through it all she remains a happy, energetic, sometimes-stubborn Golden girl who loves tennis balls and tolerates her younger sister. She is now almost ten and living her best life, all because she is surrounded by “Team Molly”, a dedicated group of specialists, volunteers, and donors who love and support her.
POLO (13-123), was born in Cairo, Egypt, and when he was less than a year old a gardener hit him on the back with a rake paralyzing his back legs. An Egyptian animal rescue group paid to fly him to the US for treatment and GRREAT agreed to take him in. An MRI showed that his spinal column had been atrophied, and that nothing could be done surgically to help him regain the use of his legs. Today, Polo, who will soon be 8years old, gets around in his own custom-built wheelchair. His rehabilitation regimen includes acupuncture, swimming, physical therapy, and hydrotherapy. Polo is a bit of a charmer. His specialty doctors and therapists all love him, as do his foster folks who have tirelessly provided care and treatment. GRREAT’s Simile-Finale Fund helps defray some of the cost of his treatments. Polo is a happy and energetic pup. In his wheelchair, he gives his foster siblings a run for their money. He is a terrific ambassador for GRREAT and is always the focus of attention when he is at GRREAT events. Last year he was elected Delaware State’s Rescue Dog of the Year, and was honored by Governor John Carney at the State House.
