STEVIE (aka Higgins) is an 8 year old Golden Retriever mix who has a Golden Retriever temperament – loving and gentle. His foster mom shared these insights: When I sit on the floor he comes over and gently sniffs my head-shoulders-cheek – his whiskers tickle. He enjoys petting and eagerly approaches and leans in for it. He loves food, especially plain, unsalted rice cakes as treats! Stevie is a brave dog, but had a hard life before HART saved him. He was picked up as a stray in southwest Virginia, dirty, matted and wandering around alone, which is especially disturbing because he is fully blind. He was so matted that the vet had to shave down his coat. Although he can’t see, his sense of smell and hearing are excellent and help him navigate quite well after he learns the obstacles in a space. Stevie is smart and is quickly learning commands.
